At Chubb, we support programs to assist young people from high-need communities to receive educational

eventually employees!

In my hometown in the Dominican Republic, the longest road is only about two miles. It’s underdeveloped
there, with a lot of poverty. We lived with my grandmother, whose house was made from cinderblocks and
wooden planks. It had a zinc roof — the kind that flies away during a hurricane.
Our days began at 5 a.m. with roosters squawking and everyone getting ready for work and school. My cousins
lived next door and things were always lively. We had big meals and passed food through the windows. On
weekends, we’d all go to the beach or river and swim.
Before I moved to the United States, I spent summers with my dad in New York. We visited the Statue of
Liberty and the Empire State Building, and I always thought the city was too big for me. I figured I would get
lost. And now here I am, with the opportunity to work for a big company.

Janiela has been involved with the Tri-County Scholarship program since applying in junior high school.
On a typical day at Chubb, I work directly with underwriters and processing centers, connecting the two
departments. I help to keep us in compliance with state laws, requirements and deadlines.
My mom loves to tell her eight sisters about my achievements at Chubb. I can always feel that appreciation
and that push. It’s the same drive that motivated us to apply for the Tri-County Scholarship when I was in junior
high, and I’ve been involved with the program ever since. Throughout high school, I volunteered at the yearly
gala, and as an alum, I give speeches about my experience with Tri-County.
At the most recent TCSF gala, organizers played a video where I talk about my dad. In one part, I say that he’s
a truck driver who wakes up at three or four o’clock in the morning and knows the value of education. I had
already seen the video multiple times, but being there with everyone, I was overcome with emotion. Sitting at
the table with Chubb executives, there I was, wiping away my tears.
I was honored to introduce Paul Krump that night. Even though he’s a busy executive, he always makes
eye contact and has full and meaningful conversations with me. It’s not just small talk. Katherine Pena, an
underwriter who was my internship mentor, is another person I look up to at Chubb. When I first started here, I
was so young — just 21, coming into a big company. Katherine’s like a big sister; she always listens and helps
me find solutions to problems.
I’ve been at Chubb for about two and a half years, and there are still so many avenues to explore within the
company. I’ve come so far since those summers exploring New York with my dad, who now lives in Paterson
with my mom and siblings. Because of the many opportunities Chubb and Tri-County have offered to me, I can
now share simple pleasures with him — things he never thought he’d experience. About a year ago, I was able
to cosign a brand-new S.U.V. for him, fresh off the lot. The happiness and pride my dad felt definitely shone
through his eyes that day.
